What Smart Follow-Ups do
Smart Follow-Ups continue a conversation after your automation sends its Final Response. You can schedule later DMs, stop them when the person replies in Instagram DMs, and optionally send a reminder only if they have not clicked a tracked link button.
They work with Comment, DM Keyword, and Story Reply automations that deliver a Final Response. Scheduling does not start when you only save or activate an automation. It starts after that Final Response is successfully delivered.
Learn more about Smart Follow-Ups.
Before you start
You need:
- A connected Instagram account that is ready for automations
- An automation with a Final Response (text or card)
- Smart Follow-Ups available on your plan to activate them (drafts can still be configured)
- For Comment automations: Opening Message turned On (required before you can add follow-ups)
- For No-Click Reminders: a link button on the Final Response so ZayDM can track whether it was clicked
How scheduling works
When a session starts
ZayDM schedules follow-ups only after the automation's Final Response is successfully sent.
Follow-ups do not start during Opening Message or Follow Gate. Button taps such as Continue, Follow Gate actions, or Final Response CTA taps also do not start the follow-up timer by themselves.
Each follow-up step waits from Final Response delivery for the first step, then from the previous follow-up for later steps. The editor timeline phrases this as waits after Final Response or after previous follow-up.
Latest interaction wins
There is one active follow-up sequence per person for an Instagram account.
If the same person later completes another ZayDM automation and a new Final Response is delivered, the newer follow-up sequence replaces the older pending one. Older scheduled steps for that earlier journey stop.
Messaging window
Follow-ups can only send while Instagram still allows messaging for that conversation.
If the messaging window is closed, pending follow-ups are not eligible to send until the person messages you again and a new eligible conversation window is open. Keep total delays inside the product delay limits so sequences stay within a typical messaging window.
Configure follow-up steps
In the classic automation editor, open Response Flow, then find Smart Follow-Ups after Final Response.
- Select Add follow-up.
- Set Wait in minutes or hours.
- Choose the action: Send a follow-up or Remind if they don't click.
- Edit the message (text or card) and select Done.
- Add more steps if needed, or delete a step you no longer want.
Steps appear as Follow-up 1, Follow-up 2, and so on in list order. Reordering is not available. Save the automation with Save changes.
Delay rules and step limits
Current product limits:
- Up to 3 follow-up steps
- Each step must wait at least 5 minutes
- Combined waits across all steps cannot exceed 22 hours
These limits keep follow-up sequences inside Instagram's typical messaging window with room for delivery.
For a quick test, use a short delay such as 5 minutes on a single Send a follow-up step.
How replies stop follow-ups
If the person sends a genuine Instagram DM reply before a scheduled follow-up sends, ZayDM stops the pending sequence for that person.
Story replies that arrive as Instagram messaging also stop pending follow-ups. Comment text on a post does not cancel them. If that comment starts another automation and its Final Response is delivered successfully, the newer sequence replaces the older one. Automation button taps (Continue, Follow Gate, or CTA buttons) do not count as a human reply for cancellation.
How No-Click Reminders work
Choose Remind if they don't click when you want a reminder only if the person has not clicked a tracked CTA on your Final Response.
Requirements:
- The Final Response must include a link button (HTTPS URL with button text), not only a URL typed in the message body
- ZayDM must be able to use tracked redirect links for that send
If they click the tracked link, that No-Click Reminder does not send. A normal Send a follow-up step still sends even if they clicked, unless a reply or a newer sequence cancelled the journey.
If they reply in DMs, pending reminders stop with the rest of the sequence.
Activate and test
- Configure Smart Follow-Ups on the automation.
- Select Save changes.
- Set the automation to Active. If your plan does not include Smart Follow-Ups, the editor allows draft configuration but activation may require an upgrade.
- Trigger the automation with a real eligible Instagram interaction.
- Confirm the Final Response arrives in Instagram DMs.
- Wait for your short test delay, or reply from the recipient account to confirm cancellation.
- For No-Click Reminders, click the Final Response link button from the recipient side and confirm the reminder does not send after the delay.
Do not treat save confirmation alone as proof of delivery. Delivery still depends on Instagram messaging eligibility.
Common issues
Follow-up never sends
- The Final Response did not send successfully, so no follow-up sequence started
- Smart Follow-Ups have no steps, or the automation is Inactive
- For Comment automations, Opening Message is off
- The messaging window is closed for that conversation
- Your plan cannot activate Smart Follow-Ups
- The person replied in DMs before the scheduled time
- A newer automation interaction replaced this sequence
Follow-up was cancelled
- The person replied in Instagram DMs or via a story reply
- They entered a newer ZayDM automation and a new Final Response started a replacement sequence
- The automation was turned inactive
No-Click Reminder did not send
- The tracked Final Response link was clicked
- The person replied, which stops pending follow-ups
- The Final Response has no link button, so the reminder cannot use tracked click state
- A newer interaction replaced the older follow-up sequence
Link click was not detected
- The CTA was typed as plain text instead of a Final Response link button
- The click happened on a different, untracked URL
- The reminder step is Send a follow-up, which does not depend on click state
